The latest OS "iOS 15" for iPhone released on September 21st. Changes from the previous version include the installation of "centralized mode" and "change of UI of notification center". Among such changes, the one that is hard to notice is the update that "the shutter sound can be turned off even with an iPhone purchased in Japan". Because there is a restriction that you are staying abroad, you cannot try it in Japan.
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to travel to France during the interview, so I brought an iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 15 and tested it. Since it is difficult to convey sound with text, please refer to the following video for the actual behavior.
As you can see in the video, if you turn on the mute mode with the switch on the left side of the main unit, the shutter sound of the camera will not sound. Not only photos, but also the small shutter sound when Live Photo is on, the sound when video recording starts and stops, and the shutter sound when taking screenshots are no longer heard.
By the way, the "iPhone 13 Pro" used is a model purchased from Apple and is equipped with a SIM from a Japanese carrier (DoCoMo).
Another reporter who accompanies this interview also has an iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 mini purchased in Japan, but since it has also been updated to iOS 15, the shutter sound can be turned off.
It has not been announced what will trigger the shutter sound off, but since the shutter sound off will be disabled when the flight mode is set, the radio wave of the mobile communication that the iPhone is holding is one of the conditions. It seems likely.
By the way, only the screenshot does not make a shutter sound even when the flight mode is turned on, and when I had it tested in Japan, it behaved the same. However, there are exceptions to this, and the screenshots of the camera app have a shutter sound.
Also, if I go to South Korea, which has the same measures as Japan, I have not confirmed how it will behave, so I do not know.
In flight mode, the shutter sound could not be turned off even overseas. When shooting with an iPhone (and smartphones purchased in Japan in general) during interviews, especially during lectures and interviews, the shutter sound was annoying, but at least it was resolved overseas, which is a nice point.
